| COMSOL,
Burlington, MA, has introduced FEMLAB(r) 3.1 multiphysics modeling
software that includes three new add-on products - an Earth Science
Module for analysis of groundwater flow and geophysics; a Heat Transfer
Module for analysis of heat transfer by conduction, convection,
and surface-to-surface radiation; and a MEMS Module for the research
and design of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). With the new
modules, the software provides equation set-ups and prewritten models
for the simulation and analysis of complex systems such as subsurface
fluid movement, chemical waste streams, resistive heating and radiative
heat transfer, and microrobots and microfluidics. It utilizes 64-bit
computing technology to solve large problems, and a multigrid preconditioner
for computationally intensive routines. Other features include a
new structured meshing technique that lets users choose form quadrilateral,
hexahedral, and prism elements; and automatic documentation of user-created
models through the use of a built-in report generator that documents
important model attributes.
