Fastening Systems, Troy, MI, has introduced Intevia™ intelligent
fastening system that replaces conventional tools with digital instructions
transmitted to a microprocessor embedded in the fastener. Software-driven
instructions in a remote tool control an actuating mechanism that
locks or releases a mechanical fastener. The Intevia framework combines
embedded electronics, an actuator, and the fastening mechanism,
which can be a pin or strip. The Intevia microprocessor can be linked
to a computer network and central database, enabling it to document,
store, and use data. With fasteners integrated within a sub-assembly,
component parts can be assembled and remotely locked into position
as a production line is moving. The microchips embedded in the intelligent
fasteners respond only to encrypted signals. Sensors integrated
into Intevia fasteners can detect, analyze, and report product performance,
wear and tear, and service and maintenance needs, and can be connected
to auxiliary sensing devices.
