SGI Introduces Octane2 System
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, June 26 -- SGI has introduced the Silicon Graphics Octane2TM visual workstation, a high-performance UNIX desktop line. According to SGI, Octane2 combines a new, robust implementation of SGI VProTM graphics; an optimized crossbar architecture; a high-performance MIPS RISC processor; and other features developed for power users in technical and creative fields. "Octane2 is designed for our world-class customers who rely on our IRIX OS-based solutions to solve their most complex desktop problems," said Greg Goelz, vice president of marketing for workstations and IA servers at SGI. "Ongoing and aggressive innovation for UNIX customers is a key element of SGI's overall workstation roadmap that includes IRIX, Windows NT, and Linux systems." Octane2 is available with two VPro graphics configurations: V6 with 32MB graphics memory and V8 with 128MB graphics memory. Octane2 V6, with up to 8MB texture memory, is suitable for powering 3D CAD modeling and animation applications. According to the company, Octane2 V8 offers texture memory capacity of 104MB and advanced imaging and visualization capabilities. The V8 configuration is also designed to support extremely large and precise images. Applications include CAD styling, digital prototyping, geosciences, medical imaging, and visual simulation. SGI says that Octane2 offers several new features, including acceleration of the new OpenGL 1.2 ARB imaging extensions. Octane2 V8 provides 128MB of configurable graphics memory, which can be used by an application as texture memory or graphics effects with 96-bit accuracy. Octane2 with VPro graphics is also designed to deliver a hardware implementation of specular shading with per-pixel normal interpolation, rather than texture overlays. Octane2 systems are available now and in volume next month. Octane2 with V6 graphics starts at $17,495 U.S. list for a system that includes a single 360 MHz MIPS R12000A processor, 256MB of memory, a 9GB Ultra SCSI disk, 32MB of graphics memory, and a 21-inch monitor. Octane2 V8, which starts at $24,995 U.S. list, includes a single 400 MHz MIPS R12000A CPU, 256MB of memory, a 9GB system disk, 128 MB of graphics memory, and a 21-inch monitor.
