ST. LOUIS, May 13 -- Unigraphics Solutions Inc. (UGS) has announced the shipment of Parasolid Version 11, the latest release of the company's geometric modeling toolkit. Parasolid is the component software technology used in several companies' CAD, CAM, and CAE products, including UGS's Unigraphics and Solid Edge. According to Unigraphics, a key enhancement to Parasolid V11 is its support for new parallel algorithms delivering performance gains on symmetric multi-processor (SMP) workstations. The company says that this version also includes several advances in core geometric modeling operations, in addition to a new Parasolid Web Update Service program. Parasolid V11 is designed to deliver an SMP-enabled kernel, which allows applications running under Windows NT on Intel-based hardware to harness the price/performance potential of multi-processor computers. "Intel is investing significantly in enabling multiprocessing capabilities -- an affordable and largely untapped source of improved application performance -- on Intel Architecture (IA)-based workstations," said Anand Chandrasekher, general manager of Intel's Workstation Products Group. "We are delighted that Unigraphics Solutions' SMP version of Parasolid, the industry's most widely used mechanical-design geometry kernel, will join a growing list of IA-based SMP applications." In V11, Parasolid's hidden-line capabilities have been optimized for large models. Unigraphics says that this allows geometric features below a specified size to be ignored, thereby balancing the trade-off between appropriate fidelity and compute time. Parasolid V11 is also designed to provide model-healing technology aimed at automatically correcting problems caused by importing poorly constructed geometry from less accurate CAD systems. V11 introduces a new face-healing capability designed to augment Parasolid's Tolerant Modeling technology. Other V11 features include customer-requested enhancements such as improved surface construction, blending, local operations, and patterning. With Parasolid V11, Unigraphics has introduced a new Web Update Service Program for all commercial Parasolid licensees. This service allows customers to download Parasolid Update Packs directly from the company's Web site.
