MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, May 17 -- SGI has announced that its Silicon Graphics 320 visual workstation supports Intel's new 550MHz Pentium III processor. "Silicon Graphics 320 leverages the latest Intel 550MHz Pentium III processor to make the visual-computing architecture an even more productive technology investment," said Murali Dharan, vice president of marketing for SGI's workstation division. "Customers can take advantage of these performance improvements in applications such as CAD, content creation, and video editing, where the price/performance strengths of the visual workstation are most apparent." According to SGI, the 550MHz Pentium III gives the Silicon Graphics 320 a boost in system performance, increasing both compute and graphics acceleration. The company says that in tests performed using the ViewPerf benchmark suite, the Silicon Graphics 320 with the 550MHz Pentium III posted results showing up to a 7-percent gain in performance over previous tests. The Silicon Graphics 320, which is based on Intel processors and the Windows NT operating system, began shipping in February 1999. The system is designed to provide leading-edge performance and value for visual-computing professionals who use applications involving 2D graphics, 3D graphics, and video. SGI says that the Silicon Graphics 320 offers a combination of high-end visual computing, professional graphics, and media functionality not previously available on the desktop. The Silicon Graphics 320 visual workstation powered by the Intel 550MHz Pentium III in single- and dual-processor configurations is scheduled to become available in late May 1999. According to SGI, prices start at $4,115 (U.S. list) for a configuration with one 550MHz Pentium III processor, 128MB of RAM, 6GB Ultra ATA hard drive, Cobalt graphics engine, keyboard, and mouse.
